What Can you Learn from Wimbledon

OMG the English summer may actually be here!

I'm looking forward to watching Wimbledon on the telly while sipping Pimms..

Granted, summer will probably last 2 weeks total, but it was wonderful this morning to walk amongst verdant greenery in the actual sun...

If you can meet with triumph and disaster, and treat these two imposters just the same...
— Rudyard Kipling - inscribed above the entrance to Wimbledon's Centre Court

It's what you do between points that counts...

'Aggh - I totally don't need this right now!'

Sound familiar?

Yup, we have all been there, when there is just too much on and we really really don't need that extra thing right now...

Switching between seeing the next patient after the last one made a complaint?

Coming home after a hell of a day and trying not to take it out on the kids?

What about that tricky conversation you have really not been looking forward to?

We all have pretty rubbish times - at times.

How do we deal with them?

Partly it's about accepting life is not all saccharine and easy. But even if we achieve this state of zen like acceptance - what then?

What practical strategy actually works??

Dr Adam Fraser has a fab approach he devised after reviewing the key differences between elite athletes and the rest...

...It wasn't technique or fitness. For tennis pros for example, it wasn't how they performed the point.

It was what they did between points.

Ever wondered what they are actually thinking in that moment they sit wiping their racquets and sipping squash...?

That, it turns out, is they key...

The ones who performed best didn't dwell on the failure - or success - of the last point.

They didn't spend time winding themselves up with 'what ifs'...

They reflected, and put the last point behind them -

Took some time to rest -

And focused on the next point.

Reflect.

Rest.

Reset.

Adopting this approach between patients, between home and work and even between tricky work conversations can really help.

Try it.

And let me know how you get on.
