Your Easiest Wellbeing Tool

Hello you lovely folk,

Really loving the summer vibe we have had recently-hope you have had a chance to soak up a few rays before the thunder started!

Perhaps the truth depends on a walk around the lake
— Wallace Stevens

I'm just back from a meeting. I walked. Rather nice change to other modes of transport.

And it got me thinking.

If you are able bodied and have not just woken, chances are you would have walked at some point today before reading this.

Where did you walk? Just around the house or at work?

Or did you manage to get outside?

Were you dashing - phone and take-away coffee in hand or did you get a chance to have a breather?

How often do we give the humble walk our attention?

Mindful walking is amazing - it will be part of our next 1 Day Autumn Recharge Retreat- but even if you don't have time for dedicated mindfulness, walking can be a great way to ground yourself. Something about its rhythm can be soothing if we give it some attention.

And that is key. Our attention.

Given that we all walk daily, it can be helpful to use these moments as a brief space for ourselves.

Even if it's just the 3 steps to the next patient, (if that is how you work) it can help to use these as a brief mini-break for yourself.

Several great authors have written about the healing that can come through walking - especially in nature.

But even in the city - there is always the sky; glimpsing the clouds and birds can be a real tonic as you walk to your next meeting.

The wonderful Katherine May wrote about this in her book The Electricity of Every Living Thing.

I was super excited to meet her at the Hay Festival recently. She describes weekends of walking that allowed space and reflection to 'join the dots' and come to the realisation she has autism. She has since been formally diagnosed and found the insight and understanding life changing.

So here's a question;

When did you last walk?

Where did you go?

What did you reflect on?
